Are we ready to participate in our communities?

The way community is governed is changing.  Our communities – that’s you, me, all of us, are being asked to step up and fill those gaps.

    But are we ready?

When we are in a deep state of loss, as many of our organisations are right now, we naturally bunker down to protect our piece of pie.  We risk our own capacity to collaborate and do this work

It’s not adequate enough to convene and bring people together and say everyone has a voice. When a participatory culture is not the norm, people need the skills, tools, information and opportunities to build self-confidence and find their passion, and take baby steps to participation

This talk from Kelly Ryan, President and CEO of the Incourage Community Foundation, talks to a big bet that their foundation took to change from just giving funds, to making bold steps to work on a culture change and creating a nurturing space for innovation and participation within their community.

Revitalising Community Governance Project: COCB Grant Award!

We are pleased to announce that the Coalition of Community Boards and Volunteering QLD have been successful in receiving funding from the Queensland Community Foundation for the Revitalising Community Governance Project.

This is such a wonderful step that philanthropic bodies are recognising both the benefits of collaboration, and the benefits of community led governance.

The project will bring together the skills and expertise of Volunteering Queensland, the Coalition of Community Boards and local organisations such as the Regional Social Development Centre to enable community service organisations in Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday regions to build the foundations necessary to govern themselves effectively, and work together to build stronger community outcomes.

A Special Opportunity for Community Organisations to Enhance the Services of their Organisation and the Skills and Capacity of their Staff

Logan East Community Neighbourhood Association (LECNA), in collaboration with David Rolls, B.Ed. (Soc. Wk.), has achieved a great deal of success over the past eight years by utilising the KNIT (Knowledge, Networking, Intervention and Training) program to support families and individuals.  The program’s effectiveness has been recognised by four times being refunded by the Commonwealth Department of Social Services as part of the Family Support Program.  There is considerable quantitative and qualitative data to justify this support from the Department, not least of which are the numerous stories that people who have participated in the programme  tell of improvements in quality of life for themselves and their families.
